i guess anyhow it`s should be free.. i took a fast look at the 2 license and i guess Creative Commons Noncommercial is good. and i didn`t real read all of FDL yet.but i`ll soon.

Attribution.
Well its realy important thing I have read both licenses I think Creative commons is better specialy Attribution one I think we dont care if others used our content but at least refer back to us :):)

I was just wondering about that the other day and thought we should start a discussion. This needs careful reading of both licenses. Whatever we choose, a new member should agree upon registration that any content he contributes to EGLUG is by default under that license unless he explicitly specifies other license when contributing with a specific piece of content. Or include a note or a link on the "create content" page.

Actually, you raise a good point. I think that the license we choose should not be optional and should apply sitewide.
Someone could otherwise create content and then place it under a restrictive license, under which circumstances eglug would implicitly be forced to support this by hosting it.

how about a couple of licenses
by default licensing sounds like a good idea to me, and off course it should be a Free/Open license.
however I think it will be difficult to agree on whether to use a copyleft license or not.
there are situations when I think we should absolutly not use a copyleft license, like for instance if we make a press release or a press kit, you want people to reuse that in any possible way.
on the other hand if I spend time writing a long document I would only want it published with a copyleft license, if copyleft is not an option then my non casual content would probably end up on my website and only links will be posted to eglug.
so how about we give people a choice of two licenses, one copyleft and one not, with one of them being default.
or even better, the choice would only be available to articles and wikipages but not to comments, forum posts or news items?
tab3an there is a whole other problem which is derivative work, translated material for instance has to abide by the original license, we need to make sure that correct license info is published and not just stick our own default.

...Create a taxonomy called "License" and create a term for each license you have. The taxonomy description could be a short description of the license (think Creative Commons) and a link to the full legal license (again, think Creative Commons). Than whenever you post a work, select the license it goes under.so we got several selectable cc licenses for everything and the default one is the site wide agreed upon license.

its the decision on which licenses to use that is a problem.

well i think in blog spaces, seniors can select any of the creative commons choices.
outside blogs its a single (by-sa*) license. May be a (by) only license occasionally for stuff that we might want to be consumed by the media like our about page, faq, press kit etc..

طب ليه دلوقتي بالذات يعني؟ أولا عشان أنا مزنوق في صفحة من الويكي وعايز أحطها في كتاب (رخصته FDL بالمناسبة) وثانيا عشان الموضوع اتساب لفتره طويله وأنا يهمني أعرف ظروف الحاجات اللي بكتبها في الويكي ايه.
أظن أن احسن حاجة أن منختارش رخصة واحدة لكل المحتوى، لكن نختلف حسب نوع المحتوى، يعنى المقالات والويكي مش زى المنتدي ومش زي المدونات وهكذا، ولا كده هيعقد الحكاية؟
أما بالنسبة للرخصة اللي هنختارها فأنا مش خبير في الحاجات وهنعوز حد بيفهم في الكلام ده يقول الفرق بينهم إيه

i said again it should be free/open License ... but i don't know about them i didn't read them so if someone in the community have an opinion please post it and let the community disscuse what it should be.

Adding the 3 licenses will complicate the things. I'd say we add all of them in that case. And in that case, What are we going to do about the old content ??
I suggest:
Before we post the poll, We need to sit down and write a paragraph or 2 about the options we have so people can read and vote.

no sorry I don't think we should offer a no derivs option. how could a wiki use no deriv? this is a FOSS community it would be plain stupid not to allow derivative work. commercial or not commercial is a good question.
I also think we should have one single license and that it should apply to old and new content period, having multiple licenses will just confuse people.
if you feel strongly about it you can publish on eglug under the license EGLUG chooses, and on your own space under whichever license you want (dual licensing), but this will only apply to the original version, any derivatives generated on EGLUG will follow EGLUG's license

we reached this conclusions from talking in the IRC and on the phone " only explaning more the same points " . i do agree about the No derivs issue. but we having one license i'm not sure i think it's not that complecated that the user will chose one of license that the community approved..

what is complicated is not
what is complicated is not choosing a license, what is complicated is doing derivative work that involves multiple licenses.
you wrote a wiki page using GFDL and I wrote a wikipage using some CC license and someone wants to edit them and combine them under one page which license should she use?
you wrote a forum post and used GFDL, I'm writing a comment to that post and I want to choose a different license.
and so on.

I agree though that we should offer more info with the poll, maybe a wikipage with links to the three licenses and links to non legalese description of them and a short paragraph describing each of them in arabic for those who will find even the non legalese too difficult to understand.
