EGLUG Backups.

MSameer's picture

I'm a bit worried and I'd like to ask the administration team about our backups. Do we take backups for the document root and the MySQL database ?

If yes, It's fine and I raise my "non red-"hat.

If not, I'd like to know why and what can be done.

Thanks MSameer for your concern. backups are not taken automatically, we take periodically but not on regular basis for both document root and mysql.

Diaa since you are responsible for the backups I'd like to know the date of the latest backups and where they are stored.

I don't like this tone , anyway Sheif is downloading them from time to time.

I am not the only the one who is responsible for backups ,I am responding to MSameer inquery.

What tone? I asked a simple question, without any hidden meanings. I expected a simple answer. Is that too much to ask ?

As a member of this

As a member of this community and to all the administrative team. The people I gave my voice and I have all the rights to ask them any time about things that can bother me with eglug:

  1. When was the last time you took a backup.
  2. I'd like to know where they are stored (It's not important for me to know but I'd love to).

Diaa, the only thing I can conclude from your way of talking is that you either don't know (Which is fine) or you don't take backups at all and you are just saying that you do so I can shut up.

  • You liking the tone or not is not something that should prevent you from answering. The position you are occupying forces you to give me an answer.
  • This is not for Diaa only. It's for the rest of the team.
  • I'm welling to help with the backups if you want but I will be giving only one of you (I trust personally) access to the boxI'll be using to take the backups.

without further ado

Last time Today ,the previous when Amr was doing the utf8 thing conversion (refer to Amr)

I'd like to answer your second question , they are stored on Shreif computer and my home machine, Which we can do it on our own at the moment ,if you have other solution please propose it.

As I have stated "we take periodically but not on regular basis " which means there is room for mistake or delay.

anyhow thanks for offering your help .

I think we need to make an automated backup solution, with storage in a better place.

Anyone has ideas about such a service ?

MSameer's picture

You can use something like

You can use something like rsync.net You'll have to pay for the service AFAIK. Or I can give eglug a space on my home server although I'm considering moving to rsync.net.

Today when I started

Today when I started talking about it. Great.

Which we can do it on our own at the moment ,if you have other solution please propose it.

I'm not really sure I understand this.

idea

I think that since we are not paying anything for the hosting anymore, that we get paid backup space. The cost will be divided among admins, and maybe we allow for donations.

That is instead of paying for the host, we pay for the backups.

rsync.net seems like a good idea, because it is an incremental backup, thus saving bandwidth. We can have periodic snapshots stored on optical media, kept with the admins.
