Hi all, The title says it loud and clear. I wanna join the administration team for EGLUG. For those of you who don't know me: I basically have plans ranging from upgrading the site theme to increase the amount of active users on the site. I have major focus on the site because I think it's the corner stone for many of the EGLUG members. Awaiting your replies.
This is good
I have stepped back from admin team, your request will fulfill the position.
But things should have procedures let's see the comment from eglug community
Diaa Radwan
hm
you can contribute without benign an admin by the way..

i agree
I agree with you so lets ask him
Omar what things you would do as admin and wouldn't done as member
I Was Known as POSIX
What will you do?
Omar,
Why don't you contribute first and see what the community will say, there are people here that are with the community longer than you, and some of them are looking forward for this position too. So long and thanks for all the fish.
talk of the community at
talk of the community at the moment is almost like a joke, eglug doesn't exist anymore.
but, there is no point in Omar joining the team without proving himself first, Admins delegated tasks to non admins before and that's how we got to know about alienbrain.
I suggest we do the same, Omar wants to help and that should be appreciated and exploited.
so Admins what kind of drupal tasks do we need, how about replacing rankvote module with decision module (implementing our own voting algorithm if nessecary).
or how about a trail upgrade to drupal 5.

I would like to make things clear: I started Drupal Egypt community as an aim to gather drupalists in Egypt. What was really bad that I had no computer thus I can not be online for the whole time and none of those I know who are interested in Drupal neither offered a hand nor were interested in the idea. Two different things in EGLUG: I have a computer right now and there're other admins not just me. You know how it's tough to start a community while it's easier to maintain that community. Alaa: I agree with you. I am keen to do something for the EGLUG though it does no longer exist except in the form of a web site and an IRC room. Regards to all.
New blood
Omar I welcome you to eglug and I hope you spark a new era of activity. I salute your skills in PHP/SQL/Drupal, and would like to help you help us. If you look at the following page :
You will see the things that need to be done.
Alienbrain has been toiling away at the eglug's drupal upgrade, without any real help from the other admins ( including me ). I just recently learnt real PHP and drupal, so I might join the effort. What you could do is look at the pages here :
and here :
And pick issues and tackle them. Once we are done to 4.7 migration we can jump to 5.0 if possible.
If you I were you I would create a child page for things you fix, explaining the code etc.. , this way you produce a good refernce for would be upgradees as well as collect enough points. Once you have enough points , and you are still interested you will become a senior member and be eligible for entering the inevitable poll to determine diaa's replacement.
Seeing that no one is actually active, you will be a compelling candidate.
I hope I didn't make things difficult. Feel free to comment or criticize.
Good
Thanks Islam for the welcome. It's great for sure and you made everything as easy as it should be. I just have one comment about what you said above: I do not plan to move EGLUG to Drupal 4.7 because this way EGLUG will move to Drupal 5.0 when Drupal 9.0 is out. I will simply move EGLUG to Drupal 5.0 with the available modules for Drupal 5.0 and write what's needed. I hope I can get some administrators help in terms of providing site dump which will really help me upgrade. Thanks once again.
2 admins approved giving
2 admins approved giving you db dump. I will provide the dump;so you can start the move.
Diaa Radwan
good point
that is really good point..
admins we e have to move first to 4.7.?
I Was Known as POSIX
Great
EGLUG.org will move to Drupal 5.x once the first maintenance release is released.
We also need a better theme, as many have complained about the current one.
Also, There is diff module which I couldn't find a 4.7 port for, it needs to be ported or backported (as there are 4.6 and 5.0 versions only!), and a migrate path from rankvote module to a better voting system would be great.
Regarding the dump, I will give you a dump of test.eglug.org which is 4.7 so you can upgrade to 5.x directly, phone or ping me on IRC so we can coordinate this.
I thought that alienbrain
I thought that alienbrain was supposed to give Omar a SQL dump if alienbrain doesn't upgrade it by last Saturday per our phone conversation ?
I'm not sure what's going on. We are running an unsupported version of drupal, someone is offering to help, 3 admins of the 4 agree yet nothing is happening!!
You are welcome.. well
You are welcome..
well in the release notes on drupal.org it says :
"For the most trouble free transition, it is recommended that you first upgrade existing installations to Drupal 4.7."
So you will have to move to 4.7 first and from there to 5.0 ... at least for the core installation.. I guess modules can go to 5.0 directly ( making sure there's an upgrade path for those that need, specially the ones that store data in the mysql database ).
However my expertise is limited in this field.
Alienbrain, I believe drupal.org ( a heavy traffic site ) has been running 5.0 rcs for a long time, why delay the move until 5.1 ?
I think I feel like I have missed something that happened online or in a phone conversation. Anyone care to enlighten my ignorance ?
I've stated what happened
I've stated what happened on the phone.
I don't mind us moving to 4.7. It's up to the administration team to decide. The problem is that I see 3 of the 4 admins are with giving Omar the SQL dump but the process's been stalled for no obvious reason _while we are running an unupported version_
Say that you don't want to give away the dump because he's a new member. Say that you don't trust him.
But don't stall the process like that!!!
Please stop running off
Please stop running off with conclusions like that, no one is stalling anything. Or is there something I don't know... I didn't know of any agreement to do this, but I'm willing to provide the dump. Omar state your medium..
To make things sane, I will try to drop the user info from the database ( although the passwords are md5sum hashes right? )...
Seconded
Exactly, in my previous comment I said: Regarding the dump, I will give you a dump of test.eglug.org which is 4.7 so you can upgrade to 5.x directly, phone or ping me on IRC so we can coordinate this.'
So it's clear I don't mind, owahab didn't contact me yet.
Now I want to make myself clear, I'm not comfortable with how this help thing is coordinated. If we want to let owahab do the upgrade, then fine, elections.. etc. Once he is in, he can do whatever he thinks is fit. But as for the moment, carrying upgrades or deciding when to move to what is the admin team's responsibiliy (and my very specific responsbility since I'm the drupaller in the admin team). It's for the good of EGLUG.org and is also our right to tell volunteers who wish to help HOW to help us in a way that's convenient for both of us. This topic is going in a much different and unconvenient way for me at least, I'm being told how a volunteer is going to help me which is unconvenient completely and wrong since I'm the one who is carrying the upgrade and who knows what's done or needs to be done and I am entitled to coordinate this in whatever way I see right. The fact that we (actually, I) are late in the upgrade entitles you to initiate a community vote against me if you see I'm unfit for the admin position, but it doesn't entitle you to force me to accept help in a way I don't agree with and this topic is just that. However, I choose to just let go of this whole thing and accept the unconvenience if that is for the good of EGLUG.org and since other admins and respected community members (including yourself) seem to be OK with this.
Phaeronix, I advice to wait until the first maintenance release because even though RCs get tested, they don't get actually used by a wide variety of users like the stable releases. The difference in the usage rate is huge. Unless there is something that would obviously benefit us in 5.x, I think it's better to wait for the first maintenance release. But anyway, it's not like we need to take a decision about this right now, we can decide about this later.
So it's clear I don't
I did contact you and we agreed on something. Now you are breaking your word.
So you are refusing to deligate the task to him ? That's not a problem. You could've said that from the beginning. But notice that we are running an unsupported version of drupal. You have no option except to upgrade to a supported one ASAP. It's up to you to decide the version to upgrade to, either 4.7 or 5.0 but this must happen ASAP.
- A volunteer have full rights to state what he can do and how he can do it. You can't force a volunteer to do what he doesn't want.
- No one told you how to upgrade. We are in a crisis and we are offering help. We agreed on something and now you are acting in a strange way. That's what I care about ATM. Let the devil upgrade it but let's get it done.
The fact that we (actually, I) are late in the upgrade entitles you to initiate a community vote against me if you see I'm unfit for the admin position, but it doesn't entitle you to force me to accept help in a way I don't agree with and this topic is just that.We are NOT FORCING YOU. You accepted it on the phone last thursday.
I hope you understand my main point.
If you want to help
If a volunteer wants to help upgrading from the _unupported version_, they don't need dumps or whats so ever, but they need to contact the person who is carrying the upgrade and offer help.
I'm porting rankvote, and I need someone to port diff module, that's what would really help.
Gentlemen
Gentlemen, I wanna tell you something. I had the opportunity to propose to move Mozilla's QA team from WrodPress to Drupal, Firefox's team leader was handling the upgrade issue so I was directly communicating with the guy. What's all that crap for? Simply I wanna tell you it was really easier than having to post daily replies about pla pla. Alienbrain, you really gave me a feeling I am going to upgrade some NSA site or something. I'll cut the crap and leave you with your outdated software to enjoy and this is the end of the story for me. Have fun all of you and thanks for the cool feelings.
owahab, I've stated that
owahab, I've stated that I'm making myself clear about something that annoyed me (which is a good thing IMO), if you don't like it, fine we can argue, but I've also cleary stated that I'm willing to cooperate and that I'm going to give you the sql dump you asked for. I've also asked explicity for help in porting mentioned modules. So you can help if you still want to, me not being OK or comfortable with how this is being coordinated doesn't affect anything. I'd appreciate it if you reconsider what you've said.
End Of Story
Me and alienbrain were having a bit of misunderstanding.
The remaining modules to be ported are:
Alienbrain will be finalizing rankvote. I'll upgrade diff by tonight.
Here's the diff module
Thanks!
Thanks MSameer, works great.
Cool, Well done. Now how
Cool, Well done.
Now how do we proceed ?
I'd love to see eglug upgraded before I leave Egypt ;-)
Almost there
