The revisions let you track differences between multiple versions of a post.

MSameer's picture

just came back from the FireSphinx party and I finally decided to dump and proprietary browser I used to use and move to FireFox.

now FireFox is only as good as the extensions you use, out of the box it lacks many essential features so lets make a good wiki page with all the extensions people actually use and like.

please don't just post comments, edit this page and add your extensions.

maybe later on we should have review articles of these extensions

  • Adblock - advert blocker using wildcards and regular expressions, quite easy to generate rules
  • All In One Gesture - I use it to implement mouse gestures ala opera
  • BugMeNot - the killer feature, helps you login to annoying website that require a free registration to give you access to content
  • Download Manager Tweak - hate dialog boxes, this extension turns the download manager into a tab or a sidebar where it belongs
  • Ext2Abc - lets just say it was stupid to list extensions in a random order
  • Gcache - right click to display current URLs google cache, good for dead urls
  • Popup ALT Attribute - hover mouse over image, read alt, I don't have to be blind to want to know what this image is supposed to be.
  • ReloadEvery - another ala opera, reload page every foo seconds
  • Tab Clicking Options - stupid UI design, another extension to the rescue, tabs should have their own close button, double clicking is close enough for me
  • Wayback - right click to get current page on the way back machine, great for websites that changed and lost some content you needed (watch out for those whitehouse press releases that change with time)
  • Web Developer - first thing to actually be implemented better than opera, show website structure, edit CSS on the fly, super impose stylsheets, test different resolutions, and tens of other useful things for webdevelopers and designers

still testing other extensions, will keep you posted.

  • Tweak Network: Gives you control over the advanced firefox network settings.
  • Locale switcher: It's not that important, But It gives you a menu with all the language packs available, It was useful when I installed the 1337 language pack ;-)

  • Image zoom
  • Bookmark backup: This'll backup your bookmarks whenever you close the browser.
  • Configuration Mania: Edit hidden configuration options.
  • Googlebar: Google bar for firefox. ala google bar for IE, But even better ;-)
  • Show failed URLs

Probably more but i'm lazy.

TBE considered harmful

turns out mozilla developers warn against using tabbed browser extension.

I've been facing strange bugs since I installed many extensions, today I ahd to delete my mozilla profile and start from scratch.

I learned a lesson and it can be summed in:

  1. don't use tabbed browser extension
  2. don't download extensions from anywhere but

  1. install the absolute minimum number of extensions that will make your browsing experience tolerable, forget about fun, neat and cool minimize.

so far the extensions I cannot live without are

  • tabbed browser preferences
  • minit+ (this violates rule 2)
  • AdBlock
  • download manager tweak

I think I might end up installing mozex and bugmenot.
