AUP in IRC channel

linuxawy's picture

hey guys,

We have a serious issue in the irc channel. The AUP is violated by lots of users. Either exlicitly (by typing offending words as is) as they don't really care if they get kicked and join the channel again, or implicitly by modifying some letters in the word while it is still readable as is, like typing th!s w0rd, or even by abbrivations.

What I'm saying now is that we should think of upgrading our AUP rules to include that, or simply remove all the AUP and declare it non-AUP channel, as what's happening now is nonsence IMHO.

What do you guys think?

I'm someone who violates it

I'm someone who violates it too.

I was the one who proposed it long ago. As much as I hate it, as much I'll fight for it.

We could still ban people but I fear this will lead to nothing.

If we are to drop the AUP in the channel. we should stop advertising it as the official support channel.

Let me simplify this for

Let me simplify this for everybody ....

1) Offending words by themselves are not offending in anyway, and could be interpreted differently in different contexts.

2) We are not 10 years old kids, if someone _intentionally_ offends _someone_, then they will have to take it outside the channel, we are not their lawyers, they have a problem with each other, they both deal with it with each other.

3) We should respect each others above all, language is not really an issue here as long as you keep it funny and "cool". For example, I will use the word f*<k in many different contexts, however so few or even none are offending in anyway, its just a way to express things that are frustrating, tiring, etc....

5) Most of us know each other in real life, and some are even friends, so I don't really see a problem in deleting the whole AUP thing, besides, when someone goes extreme there is always this +o hanging around to kick/ban out.

A Note: The more friendlier and relaxed the community, the more its members will feel comfortable hanging around it, and contributing more to it. Uptight communities that care about rules and AUP's more than sharing knowledge around and just have fun in a place that feels comfortable, can literally go to hell.

let me clarify myself

As for my own openion, here is my replies to your points:

  1. I get offended by some words like the example you said, regardless of the context they are in and regardless if they are directed to me or not.
  2. Yes people should solve their problems by themselves, but they shouldn't bring them inside the community in the first place.
  3. There are much more ways to show your frustration other than saying words that you do know that they will offend someone, try to think about the others before you think about your way of showing your feelings.
  4. Well if you deleted the whole AUP, then I'm personally not honored to join this place, simple and streight forward. Even I'll be still a friend to almost everybody here. you'll have to search for someone else to carry my +o. Beside I don't think that this is the image we want others to have about our official irc.

btw, I'm one of those who you say that they can go to hell.. interested to come with me? :P

3. I have the right to

3. I have the right to express myself in the way I like whether it is offending to someone or not.

I personally believe that the AUP is utterly stupid and overrated and we should get rid of it, and honestly, by the time that people start to get banned because of the AUP, I'm leaving this channel for good !

No you don't

you can always suggest to the community to change/remove certain rules that already exists. But what we are talking here about is a way to apply the current rule. Not about making new one.

And I guess no, nobody have the right to do whatever he likes regardless of the others, otherwise this won't be called community. If this is your idea about community then you really have a big problem.

about getting banned, I didn't propose banning people (yet), but It's totally pointless to kick someone while he doesn't care about it. Either guys try to stick to the AUP and stop thinking it's their right to break it like you say, and then it's only left when someone says something by mistake (we always do), or we should think about forcing our rules which is something I don't like too.

think about it, a rule that exist. try to follow it as you can. If you don't like it try to remove the rule, not break it.

Sure I agree with you

Sure you have the right to express your self in the way you like... in your bathroom not in public channel.

believe or not believe the COMMUNITY agreed on it and you have to obey if you don`t like it you have few options :-

1-don`t go to this stupid overrated channel

2-ask for voting to decide the AUP or no-AUP

3-suggest creation of another channel (eglug-AUP and eglug-NOAUP)

We do need it. The other

We do need it. The other alternative'd be common sense but it never worked previously. That's why the relaxed AUP has been proposed.

IMHO, it's bad to have an official channel with swear words and profanity all over the place. If we are to discontinue the AUP, we should stop announcing eglug as the official support channel.

I don't understand what's wrong with having another channel without the AUP being applied. In fact, we have another unofficial channel without the AUP.

I completely disagree and will vote to keep the AUP.

Mohammed Ahmed's picture

I am totally agree with you,

I am totally agree with you, lets have another channel with No-AUP and both be our official channels.

should we vote on it , what is the procedures..

The procedure

Why do we need an official

Why do we need an official channel without the AUP ? Why don't we just agree on it! Why does it have to be official at all ?

The problem is that profanity is relative, some words are not acceptable here while they are perfectly fine somewhere else.

That's why we are among the few ones who have this problem.
