Eglug.org Usability

Hi everyone,

I would like to open a discussion about our website. During the last few months I came into contact with a lot of newbies and used the website a lot. I had several problems.

We found that it's almost impossible to get newbies to use the website! During the preparation for the fest and other activities in Alex, we tried to drive the volunteers to use the website for coordination and organization. We failed at this. Also, the website was a landing point for all the ads and the emails we sent out. People where "lost" once they landed here.

People (and me!) were having problems editing the wiki, managing the pages created, moving things around, the different types of content(wiki page, book page..)...

I am not a web developer/designer and I almost know nothing about drupal. But I use the web extensively. I am asking the drupal people here: is there a way we can improve the usability of eglug.org and make it more robust and user friendly ?

thanks,

let's talk about

let's talk about specific issues, can we make what's so called blocks, have featured events and threads and summery for the last, have shorter columns at right , remove the icons on the left, have advanced editing toolbar for editing all elements (forum topic, wiki page, book page) even Wikipedia now has one :D.

I can help with any tasks required.
that's what i see.

waiting for more replies.

I agree to what you said

drupal can do things more than you imagine, I'm no developer, but i've seen it in action. But the main problem is that we are all geeks here. IMHO the problem is not making it do as we want, it's in what we want in the first place.

We need suggestions, like what the hell is all these types? make it wiki or forum and that's it. And the admins team will try hard to do these stuff, but we actually dunno what we need.

Do we need a better design? I say yes, but I don't think that this is what's holding us back. I see we need functionality, which we can do by knowing the user experience that you mentioned in you use web extensively. let's get your suggestion then we'll try to make it happen.

My current suggestions

  1. Disabling wiki syntax by default in anything but the wiki itself.
  2. merge the articles section and the wiki, and just make a tag for completed articles.
  3. install a WYSIWYG editor in the forum.
  4. disable any user to put links in the first 3 posts he make in the site.
  5. disable putting links in the user profile unless for the 'homepage' field.
  6. create a theme that contains big bottons that points to the site sections (wiki, forum, image galleries, .. etc)
  7. Allow users to add attachements to posts, with a max of 100k per attachement.
  8. create subdomains (forum.eglug.org -> eglug.org/forum , wiki.eglug.org -> eglug.org/wikiwiki, .. etc)
  9. remove the left icons bar.
  10. enable tags and create a tagcloud for anything but the forums.
  11. change the font to a better one (especially in arabic)

Another issue

in large, multi-pages threads, when we open the first page, the highlighting of new comments is shown, but when you open the second one the user simply don't see the highlight cause drupal considered the thread to be already read by the user.
