Depends

It depend on what kind of software you download, may be you download the *.rpm binary files and this case you should find a tool like rpm or urpmi to install it, if you downloaded source code then you have to compile and usually you do have install.txt file in the source code which is recommended to read it. also a tip you can always use the package manager that shipped along with with your distro.

I'm not Suse user

while you are compiling on step of make install you should be root, in this step the program getting installed on the system, in another way. the binaries goes to /usr/local/bin/ or something like that , docs gose too /usr/local/share/docs/ and so on . so you need to be root in this step. may be you did the extract with root and you try to compile with normal user which will cause permission problems too. about this login and arabic issue i'm not the right man to answer that.

peace

Any info about Suse 10.2

thanks very much for ur effort to help me but doesnt anybody here know about Suse 10.2 , I thought it is the popular Linux OS so i start my test for Linux with it

first of all, know that no

first of all, know that no matter which distro you start with, it's always confusing in the beginning , specially the software management part.

i'm an opensuse user myself so i can only recommend it, it works for advanced and new users alike and it has almost everything one would want from a linux distro(and possibly more). i'm also sure users of other systems will tell you theirs are the best, so..

secondly, it's beyond me why would anyone suggest a new user to _compile_ software, least they want to scare him away.

you only need to compile in the unlikely event that your distribution doesn't have the package you want , try searching for ready rpms first using the package manager.

as to your arabic problem , i'm not sure, if you still have it i may look it up for you.

cheers

The Arabic problem again

Thanks very much 4 ur reply , i think what u say is right , About the arabic problem it still exist it happens when i tried to add a secondary language to write in arabic in OpenOffice so after i install it from language tools i found that the default selection for the starting window in boot is arabic when the system ask me about the user name i type it & found it is in arabic language it appers like that شاةثيبخعشيثميهى (for ahmedfouadeldin :)) so i pressed f10 a menu opened i choosed english but nothing is done the arabic is default , I removed the arabic language all from the system & reboot but nothing to be done i cant access my root and can't install programs if it is to be compiled thanks for your effort

well, you could try

well, you could try this:

in the login screen find ( System > Console Login ) or the arabic translation of that, once you chose this option you should be sent to a console and asked for username/password , fill them in, and you'll get a shell prompt , enter this command without the '%':

% startx

if all works you'll be able to enter your system and revert any changes you made.

(i had a problem when i tried to follow these steps myself, but i suspect it's just my machine)
