Gentoo Based live CD for windows users

Hi, I am trying to build live CD target for windows users.

I want my live CD to be based on Gentoo.

I tried catalyst and read many documentations but still I feel I am lost.

Any body can guide me to the first step,

or any easy documentation to achieve my target?

example to the problems I am facing with catalyst:

1- I can't install alsa because I have to configure the kernel and I don't know how to configure its kernel (But I know of course how to configure my system's kernel in general)

2- I have no way to configure kde (to make it as near as possible to windows XP)

3- I don't know how to make automatic hardware detection and automatic fstab

please help (note: I am very familiar with gentoo)

knoppix or phaeronix

What's wrong with knoppix or phaeronix ?

-I used to be indecisive .. but now I'm not so sure

hold on..

  • My phaeronix is based on gentoo.
  • It has exactly the same aims and ideas you listed.
  • When installed to harddisk it will function exactly as on the livecd, everything still automated.

  • We can make a phaeronix version with KDE.
  • I am currently preparing version 0.81, a bugfix and update version. wait till I release ( soon ), hard disk install it, unmerge stuff you don't like, emerge KDE, and voila !

Yours truly.

Well currently I am a one man team :)

I got another help offer here :

I hope we can work together.

Regarding your question, of course you will have to hard disk install the livecd. I have a page on installing:

After that change the useflags in /etc/make.conf and /etc/portage/package.use by replacing gtk gtk2 and gnome useflags with qt and kde flags.

then unmerge the programs you don't like and emerge the kde and related programs.

Thanks :)

You cannot modify the CD on t

You cannot modify the CD on the fly , all changes will be wiped after you reboot. You have to install it then modify it then rebuild the ISO. If it's that step you are asking about then we will discuss it later.

Any other discussions about installers and such issues will have to be postponed untill we meet together some day. let's hope we can arrange a mutual meeting time. Maybe after the install fest in september.

Thanks.

2 comments here.

1) I have nothing to do with the arabic patch fpr mplayer.

2) If you have no patience to wait for a FLOSS project maintainer then you can:

  1. start reading yourself
  2. fork the project
  3. start from scratch
  4. go buy a life.

We are NOT your slaves, If he said thatthe meeting'll be in september 2005 or even 2006 then what you can do is obey or discuss it with him, Try to know the reasons of the delay and explain why you are in a hurry, Not to say "I have no patience".

Best regards,

It's ok to be impatient, but

It's ok to be impatient, but it is not ok to force others to obey your impatience. I have my reasons for postponing things. One is I am already neck deep in studying for the final exams of sixth year medical school. Second is the install fest itself is a transitional event where I plan to release the updated version. If you plan to do any joint work then you will have to wait for that version. Maybe you can invest your enthusiasm and help me achieve that goal.

I hate giving dates of meetings too soon when I know I am too busy to attend.

I installed a 0.8 version in sakia and I am updating it there. Then I will go and fix all bugs and prepare for rebuilding the CD. I will have to wait for any eglug additions/modifications as I explained in the wiki page.

You can join me and we discuss things, you can read the things required and contribute, find and fix bugs, experiment with a copy of phaeronix to remove gnome and add kde.

waiting for your answer.

what is going on

we get a new member who is eager to work, willing to work with someone and help and we attack him???

what is wrong with being impatient, he did not order anyone around he just asked to start work immediatly and said he wanted to meet, if phaeron can't do it he can just say so.

HE IS DISCUSSING IT AND YOU ARE ATTACKING HIM

halt .. reset

Well let's try understanding each other. I didn't get offended by your post, I didn't attack or be rude. Msameer's response was typical to his personality, which doesn't make him a bad person. It's just him .. snappy.

silly_member explained his abruptness and I accepted his nature. Now let's put all this behind our backs and get back on topic.

My offer still stands.. during the period before the install fest I will be available at sakia for two or three days, I will announce this and excpect any interested members to show up. I'll call it a session on hacking livecds. lol

silly_member I welcome you to post here or on my website anytime without fear or reservation. Thank you.

tomorrow?

I don't think deleting the comments is the right thing to do. It's better to leave them so other might read them and learn from them.

You're in luck, I will be near sakia tomorrow and will pass by and stay for a few hours. I'd make the session tomorrow but I don't think people would attend within such short notice.

So I'll just extend an informal invitation for anyone interested to join me tomorrow thursday 18 august 2005 in sakia around 12:00 noon.

Hope you can make it :)
