IMO

IMO it`s not a good idea . since we alrady have our channel in irc server and drupal alrady have some modules for chatbox and stuff but it`s don`t depnds on irc server but it`s depends on the site it`s self ( ppl surffing the site can chat ) and it`s do refresh every few sec u put it and i guess that stuff will kill the speed of the site ? or what ? and i guess there is no pc don`t have IRC client ;)

peace

using any php modules will be

using any php modules will be extra killing while using a cgi will be better but also killing the website, i use xchat but it's just an idea pushed on my mind stack so i poped it here ;-)

Ideas

Well, I agree that it probably won't happen, but it's good to have these ideas in here.

Thanks maslan :)

sure

its also important that consice answers on why this idea is not implemented or cannot be implemented are important.

this way everyone knows where we are, if they find the idea too important they can suggest solutions (like different hosting providers etc.)

cheers,

Alaa

Absolutely.

Furthermore, in my assessment if someone's smart enough to be curious enough to hear of linux and find us, then that person either knows IRC or can learn it quickly.

Think we should link the irc channel from the front page to NewComer's x-chat tutorial?

not alowed by hosting provider

we are not allowed to use chat scripts according to the service agreement o ou hosting provider.

and IMO its for very good reasons, he web is not a realtime thing which IRC is realtime, doing chat scripts means refreshing a dynamic site all the time just to emulate a realtime effect, and the result is typically too bad specially under dialup, you need to transfer the whole website and loads of overhead not just the realtime chagt packets.

so its a waste of resources (cpu cycles and bandwidth), and the result is very bad.

cheers,

Alaa

ofcourse it will waste the re

ofcourse it will waste the resources of cpu can't we use a java applet for this or it's illegal ? or host doesn't support java ?

MSameer's picture

No please, The applet itself

No please, The applet itself might be free software, But the JVM is not free.

So by using it we are promoting a non free thing and we are asking people to use a non free software to access a page on a GNU/Linux user group.

unless it works with classpath

maybe it works with kaffe or gcj?

I still don't like the idea, we can point to a web IRc proxy instead.

Umm..

Excuse me, but what is the name of the IRC channel anyway? And on which server (Undernet, Dalnet, etc.)? You guys keep talking about it, but there is nowhere on the site that says what is the channel! :-)
