Enhance website colors

Hi colleges,

I have a comment about eglug.org website colors and fonts which cause problem with me personaly. I don't what about other users.

The colors which is mostly some degrees of blues with combinations of red degrees doesn't make the content visibale. So it'll be great if u can change the default color scene of the website.

this may be discussed b4. i think the more needed change about EGLUG logo

the problem is the IE render the transparent PNG files as non-transparent which make yellowy color instead of the transparent color in background for that our lovely slogan is readable.

IMO we should not break our website to accomodate broken software.

just tell everyone that it looks ugly because IE does not support web standards, and point them to firefox or something.

  1. the post you refer to is not a grand scale marketing plan its about an email campaign and is not relevant to what we do at all.
  2. we are not trying to sell a product here, the kind of service we provide, the lind of community we make is not going to be compromised because the website looks ugly on IE.
  3. are you trying to tell me that someone interested in using or contributing to free software would avoid EGLUG after taking one look at the logo????? I doubt this most community websites have a plain or ugly look, people come for the content and the people involved.
  4. we have a distinct theme not to attract people, we have it to strengthen community, the distinct theme is supposed to give character and create an independnet atmosphere, its goals are to be usable, reconisable and unique, period.
  5. avoiding b0rked software and respecting web standards is very much part of the character of EGLUG
  6. as long as the website works under IE, as long as people can read the content and seek help its good enough.

we do not attract people by look and feel folks, if we did we have failed, if thats the only way we can think of to extend our reach and membership we have failed.

please send concerete suggestions.

send us a mockup, or an alternate css stylesheet or even an alternate drupal theme.

if the people prefer it we'll use it.

if you don't know much about design, just use gimp over a screenshot of the current theme and replce the colors with the colors you'd prefer.

If you're a firefox user, get an extension called EditCSS. You open a page, press CTRL-8, and it opens a sidebar with the CSS stylesheet in it; you edit it and the changes show up in real time.

Then when you've found something you like, save the modifications and post them.

This is a copy of this very page, along with css files and images so that anyone could play with it locally and maybe come out with a good theme.

Copy the address to address bar and hit enter. Geocities prevents remote refering to files hosted on there servers.

since we modify the drupal codebase, maybe we should mirror our installation on your CVS server, this way we also have reliable revision control (I'm not very good at remembering to use RCS).

just make sure to avoid the config file with the passwords and we'll be fine.

here is a list of things to exclude

  • files/ has uploads, images from the gallery and avatars
  • includes/conf.php has db passwords, we have nothing interesting in the confs so it won't add any info
  • *~, */*~, */*/*~, */*/*/*~, etc. who knows what sensitive info lies in old backups, please avoid them

from themes, only take eglugtemplates, the rest are there for historical reasons, eglugtemplate is a mess at the moment with loads of symlinks and shit, will cleanup one day.
