Revision of Alex Interview With Mr.Omar from Sat, 04/09/2004 - 12:53pm

Egyptian companies have long relied on proprietary software to get their work done. There are many reasons for this, mainly lack of knowledge & unawareness of the Free/Open Source alternatives, especially Linux. Most business owners/managers simply don't trust free (as in beer) software. "How would a free O/S have the quality of windows ??" is a popular question. Almost everyone has some kind of windows experience, which makes them feel assured that it will be easy to get technical support.

Well, what about showing a real Egyptian business which relies solely on FOSS ?? That's exactly what we've done. We, 3 members of EGLUG, interviewed Mr. Omar BayehElDin. Mr. Omar is the owner of Abou Youssef company, which works in cloth. He's been running solely on Linux & free software for years, and he's quite satisfied. He forgot all about crashes, viruses & has saved alot of money ever since.

We: Mr. Omar, how and when did you start using Linux ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: About 5 years ago, when my relative (who studies in college in USA) told me about it. then we used to play with the system, which wasn't really user friendly at those days.

We: When did you migrate the company PCs to Linux ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: I've been running Linux solely in my company for 3 years now. I had been using a Linux fileserver even before the complete switch - which was a 386 by the way!!!.

We: A 386 ?? but it can't cope with all the load ??

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: Thanks to Linux it could, I turned off all unnecessary services and it just ran fine.

We: What was your previous configuration like, before migrating to Linux ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: All windows PCs, running Foxpro - except for the Linux server. I then switched to all-Linux PCs, with SQL Ledger instead.

We: What was the main reason you switched to FOSS?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: The main reason was the letter I recieved from (mosanafat) 3 years ago. They asked me to get rid of any pirated software or else I'd be fined & faced with criminal charges. Then i decided it would be a cost-saver if I switched to Linux. I pay ZERO money for all my software needs!

We: Which distribution are you currently using ? Are you thinking of switching to a new one ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: I'm currently running Mandrake 10 OE. I tried all sorts of distros, such as slackware, RedHat and debian - which I failed to install. I'm Thinking of trying FreeBSD, heard it's quite stable and fast (not that Linux isn't).

We: What software does your company use ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: Besides regular internet applications and office suites (OpenOffice, KOffice), we use SQL Ledger - which is the centerpiece software. It's an accounting system that does almost anything - and everything. We will discuss it in detail later.

We: What about the support where you get it and it`s avilable?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: The support is always existes on the internet since you can search on the internet about what you want to know and learn about it. and it`s not easy to find if you don`t know how and where to search for it.

We: Was the switch to Linux troublesome for your employees ? Does working on Linux require any special skills ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: Not at all. They just do the obvious File->open stuff. Nothing fancy, just regular GUIs with menus, data entry fields and stuff which is user-friendly & quite similar to windows applications.

We: How do you access common file formats, such as Microsoft Word documents ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: No problems with that. OpenOffice is almost entirely compatible with word.

We: Did you face any hardware and software problems during your period of Linux usage ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: A few hardware problems, some problem with the sound card (but that was long ago), and the eternal winmodem problem and some problem with the printer as remote printer in the LAN. and only the arabic support in the old days and the shapeing of the letters on openoffice.

We: How did you overcome thos problems ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: I used an external (real) modem, now I'm on ADSL connection and the sound card fixed in the new results of Linux same as the arabic problem fixed in new mandrake since mandrake 9.1 as i remmber and i`m using koffice.

We: How about stability & security ? Any security incidents or virus infections ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: The O/S is quite stable. It rarely crashes. As for security, I've never been hacked before and I'm not affected by the (now popular) windows viruses.

We: We've heard that you've contributed something to the FOSS community. What exactly ?

Mr. Omar BayehElDin: I did complete arabization of the client interface of SQL Ledger.

We thank Mr. Omar for his contribution (FOSS is all about contributing and giving something back) - and for his precious time cuz he was really soo busy and he give us the time we need and was so kind. and actuly he explaned to us a very useful futures in SQL-Ledger. it`s can make invoice , collact final tax , get costs , get the number of the sales for one subject of the year and alot of another good things it`s just a powerful accounting system.and we posted some screenshot for the SQL-Ledger. We hope this small interview would urge other businesses -who didn't have the courage yet- to start migrating to Open Source software and benefit from the stability, security & cost savings. And now there is some pics of SQL-Ledger in Action.

الشركات المصرية دائما تعتمد على البرمجيات المدفعوه الأجر والمفلقة المصدر لتأدية العمل. وهناك العديد من الأسباب لذلك وأهمها وبصورة أساسية , نقص المعرفة و عدم الدرايه ببدائل لهذة البرمجيات فى البرمجيات الحرة المفتوحة المصدر ,و خصوصا نظام تشغيل جنو/ليونكس. فببساطة معظم ملكو و مديرو الأعمال لا يثقون بالبرمجيات الحرة.و هناك دائما سؤال شائع وهو "كيف يمكن لنظام تشغيل حرة و مجانى أن يكون بكفاءة الوندوز؟؟". و ايضا بسسب أن تقريبا كل شخص يملك نوعا ما من الخبرة مع الوندوز فأنة يشعر أن الحصول على الدعم التقنى سيكون سهل. والأن, ما رأيك فى عرض عمل مصرى حقيقى يعتمد على البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر وحدها؟؟ قام ثلاثة من أعضاء مجموعة مستخدمى جنو/ليونكس فى مصر بعمل لقاء مع الأستاذ/ عمر بهى الدين.و الأستاذ/عمر يمتلك شركة للتجارة فى الملابس الجاهزة تدعى شركة/أبو يوسف. وهو يعتمد أعتماد تام على البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر منذ سنين, وهو راض عن مستوى الأداء لها. وقد نسى تماما العناء من الفيروسات و تلف النظام, و قد وفر العديد من الأموال بفضل البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر.

وتمت المقابلة يوم الثلاثاء ٢٤/٨/٢٠٠٤ فى الساعة ١١ صباحا بمقر الشركة. ولقد كان الأستاذ/عمر ودود و كريم معنا جدا. وبدأ بالتحدث عن الشبكة الداخلية والتى تتكون من ٢ جهاز كومبيوتر و ٢ كومبيوتر محمول, والكل يعمل بنظام ليونكس مندراك. وقام بعد ذلك الأستاذ/عمر بشرح بعض الوظائف لبرنامج SQL-Ledger المحاسبى الذى يستخدمه فى الشركة. والأن الأستاذ/عمر يستخدم ليونكس مندراك ١٠ الأصدار الرسمى بالنواة ٢.٦.٣ , وأليكم تفاصيل المقابلة:

نحن: كيف ومتى بدأت تستخدم ليونكس؟

الأستاذ/عمر: عرفت ليونكس منذ حوالى ٥ سنوات, بواسطه أحد اقاربى الذى كان يعيش فى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. وكنا نجربة ونتعامل مع النظام والذى كان فى وقتها غير ودود كما هو الأن.

نحن: متى تم نقل الأجهزة الى نظام ليونكس بالشركة؟

الأستاذ/عمر: أعمل بنظام ليونكس منذ ٣ سنوات. وعندما كنت أستخدم نظام وندوز قبل الأنتقال الى ليونكس كنت أملك خادم ملفات ليونكس يعمل على جهاز ٣٨٦!!!

نحن: هل كان الجهاز ٣٨٦ يعمل جيدا؟

الأستاذ/عمر: نعم كان جيد و كنت أغلق الخدمات غير الدرورية التى لا أستخدمها.

نحن: ما هى البرمجيات التى كنت تستخدمها قبل الأنتقال الى ليونكس؟

الأستاذ/عمر: جمع الأجهزة كانت تعمل بنظام وندوز و برنامج فوكس برو FOXpro ماعدا خادم الليونكس الذى كانت أستخدمة وقتها كخادم للملفات. وبعد ذلك تم نقل جميع الأجهزة الى ليونكس و SQL-Ledger.

نحن: ما هو السبب الأساسى للأنتقال ألى البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر؟

الأستاذ/عمر:كان السبب الأساسى هو خطاب من المصنفات منذ ٣ سنوات. يطلبوا منى التخلص من أى برمجيات غير مرخصة لى أو سأتهم بجرائم. وبعد ذلك قررت توفير المال و الأنتقال ألى ليونكس. و لا ادفع اى مبالغ مقابل البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر التى أستخدمها.

نحن: ما هى توزيعة ليونكس التى تستخدمها الأن؟ وهل تفكر فى الأنتقال الى توزيعة أخرى؟

الأستاذ/عمر: فى الوقت الحاضر أستخدم ليونكس مندراك ١٠ الأصدار الرسمى. وتقريبا قمت بتجربة معظم أنواع ليونكس مثل سلاك وير slackware, ريد هات RedHat, دبيان Debianوالذى فشلت فى عملية التثبيت. وافكر فى تجربة فرى بى أس دى FreeBSD الذى سمعت أنه سريع ويتمتع بثبات قوى.

نحن: ما هى البرمجيات التى تستخدمها فى الشركة؟

الأستاذ/عمر: بجانب برمجيات الأنترنت أستخدم حزم المكتب (openoffice.org , koffice ) و SQL-Legder كنظام محاسبى وهو فعلا قوى جدا و يمكنة القيام بالعديد من الأعمال المحسابية.

نحن: ماذا عن الدعم التقنى؟من أين تحصل علية؟

الأستاذ/عمر: الدعم الفنى صعب الحصول علية ولكنة موجود على الأنترنت ويتطلب بعد التعب فى عملية البحث و يجب أن تعلم عن ماذا تبحث و أين تبحث.

نحن: هل كان الأنتقال الى ليونكس صعب على الموظفين؟ وهل يتطلب الليونكس مهارات خاصة فى التعامل معة؟

الأستاذ/عمر: لم يكن صعبا على الأطلاق. وكل ما يقوم به الموظفين هى أشياء مثل ملف-->فتح و أشياء على هذا النحو. فقط الواجة الرسومية للمستخدم و القوائم, وحقول أدخال البيانات وهى مماثلة لما كان يتم فى الوندوز.

نحن: كيف يتم التعامل مع امتدادات الملفات الشائع أستخدمها مثل ملفات ميكروسفت ورد؟

الأستاذ/عمر: لاتوجد أى مشكلة. openoffice.org و koffice يمكنهم التعامل مع معظم هذة الملفات.

نحن: هل وجهت أى مشاكل خاصة بالبرمجيات أو الأجزاء الصلبة للجهاز خلال أستخدام ليونكس؟

الأستاذ/عمر: نعم وجهت بعض المشاكل, بعض مشاكل الخاصة بتعريف كارت الصوت ولكن ذلك كان منذ زمن طويل , ومشكلة كارت الأتصال الداخلى (المودم) , وأيضا بعض المشاكل فى تعريف الطابعة فى جهاز كخادم للطباعة لباقى الشبكة. و مشكلة دعم العربية فى وقت قديم و هناك بعض المشاكل فى دعم العربية فى openoffice.org فى شكل الأحرف.

نحن: و كيف تم التغلب على هذة المشاكل؟

الأستاذ/عمر: بالنسبة لكارت الصوت فالأن تعمل جيدا فى الأصدرات الحديثة و المودم عن طريق شراء مودم خارجى و الأن خط أنترنت رقمى ADSL و دعم العربية أصبح جيد فى الأصدرات الجديدة فى مندراك و أنا أستخدم koffice.

نحن: كيف تجد الأمان و الثبات فى ليونكس؟

الأستاذ/عمر: اليونكس ثابت جدا فنادرا ما يحدث فشل فى النظام. و للأمان لم تتم أى عملية أختراق لى حتى الأن وطبعا لا فيروسات كما فى الوندوز.

نحن: نعلم أنك أحد المتعاونين مع مجتمع البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر.كيف؟

الأستاذ/عمر: نعم فلقد قمت بتعريب واجه المستخدم لبرنامج SQL-Ledger.

و نشكر الأستاذ/عمر , على التعاون مع مجتمع البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر و نشكره على الوقت الثمين الذى منحة لنا لأنه فعلا كان مشغول ولم يبخل علينا بوقته. وقام بشرح بعض امكانيات SQL-Ledger مثل كيف يتم عمل الفواتير و حساب أجمالى الضرائب على الشركة وعدد الوحدات المباعة من سلعة معينة ورقابة المخزون من المواد الخام و هو فعلا نظام محاسبى متكامل وقوى جدا. ومرفق مع التقرير بعض الصور للبرنامج, ونأمل أن هذا اللقاء الصغير يكون حافز لأصحاب الأعمال الأخرة ويشجعهم على الأنتقال ألى البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر الأن وتوفير الكثير من الأموال.
