2) You won't need an anti-virus for Linux. I'm not gonna say that there's no such thing as a linux-virus, there are a few out there but most likely you won't meet any. Plus, those viruses on the CDs and USB sticks are probably windows-viruses that won't infect your machine.
3) Can you at least send the model of your laptop so that we can understand what you're talking about?
4) you can try wine for that but the question is why? You can use gcc, it's gonna take you sometime at first to learn how to use it but eventually you'll find out that it's more powerful. I really think you should try gcc, plus borland sucks.
5) There's no native yahoo/msn messenger for Linux as far as I know but you can use pidgin or any other similar software to do the job. These applications can manage msn/yahoo/google/etc ... accounts. And for msn, you can use something like AMSN. In my opinion, it's the best msn client for linux yet, version two is supposed to be much better but it's yet to be released and there's not release date till now.
6) Mesh 3ayez 2afty, I don't use ubuntu so either get a screenshot and post it or wait for someone that uses ubuntu to help and I suggest the latter. They can provide more help than me.
7) Well, it's kinda up to you, but I think you'd better update, they can be either an improvement or an update for a security hole. Why do you wanna ignore some?(that's what you meant by custom, right?)
8) What media are you talking about? I think you're problem would be with the codecs not the software itself, if so, then as far as I remember, you should install from 'add and remove' the GStreamer-codecs. (just search for them by typing gstreamer)
9) Also like number six, so either get a screenshot or wait.
