Ubuntu 8.10 avoids this issue

I've went to ubuntu.com, downloaded ubuntu 8.10, installed it on the same machine. The lovely part that it accepted the 5th primary drive.

There's a trick M$ uses to

There's a trick M$ uses to create a workaround for the four partition (sda1,sda2,sda3,sda4) issue by converting one of the primary partition into extended one. Inside the extended partition you can create more logical partitions (sda5,sda6,...). Even though Linux has no such problem; it's better to follow M$ partition table schema; in case something happened to Windows and you need to reinstall it.
