Add/Remove and Update Manager don't open

Hello everybody, I am a new Ubuntu user and I've just installed the OS, and i suffer from errors that keeps popping up, for ex. i wanted to install compiz so i searched for it and downloaded it, but in the middle of the download operation and error occurred and it stopped and closed.

  • After that a strange thing happened to the OS, now there's an icon beside the clock saying " A problem occurred when checking for updates", when i click on it the window of the update manager opens but it doesn't complete loading and closes without any notification.
  • The same thing happens with the "Add/Remove" when i click on it it starts but it doesn't complete loading and closes suddenly without any errors.
  • Also when i open in installation session, the package installer opens and doesn't complete and closes suddenly without notifications or errors.

I don't know what to do, i wanted to knew more about Ubuntu and I'm a brand brand new :D so I don't know much in this OS.

I would appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks in advance for any help.

I used to use Ubuntu but i am using "Linux mint" and i had never seen this before

do you have problems installing through the terminal? do you have a stable internet connection?

I don't know how to

I don't know how to install through the terminal, I'm just a beginner in it and concerning the internet connection it's stable, it disconnects and reconnects sometimes by it self but it's a technical problem from my network provider.

If you can tell me how to install through the terminal i would be thankful and try it and reply to you.

Thanks in advance.

use this sudo apt-get

use this sudo apt-get install xxxxxxx

xxxxxxx = prog name

ex: sudo apt-get install gparted

to remove replace install with remove

What's the error message

  1. What's the error message ?
  2. When does it happen ?
  3. What did you do before getting the error ?

I choose first between

I choose first between operating systems, so I choose Ubuntu, then it starts loading. In the middle of loading a message comes out saying"Unclean shutdown, checking drives"...at approximately 27% it stops and the screen displays an error message : " Error reading block 503822 (attempt to read block from file system resulted in short read) while reading indirect blocks of inode 121727

/dev/sdb6: Unexpected inconsistency: Run fsck manually

fsck died with exit status 4.

ata1.01 :status:{DRDY ERR} ata1.01 :error :{UNC} exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 BMDMA stat 0x64 ..............................

end request :I/O error, dev sdb, sector 43100719 Buffer I/O error on device sdb6, logical block 503822 ........................... ....................................."

"Error reading block ***** (attempt to read block from file system resulted in short read) while reading indirect blocks of inode ***** "

I suggest it can be caused by bad sectors from the hard drive ..??! really i don't know.

If you know please reply, thanks in advance

It appears to be a bad

It appears to be a bad sector. I googled the error

ata1.01 :status:{DRDY ERR} ata1.01 :error :{UNC} exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 BMDMA stat 0x64

And did not find anything serious but I guess it is a bad sector...
