why we need this polls?
if u dont like our community no one can force you to continue, and it's ur opinion
and if u wanna to IRC logs, start logging ur own logs and make it public don't ask from the others to do that
Im glad null is taking the interest hes taking. Means the chap cares about the community.
I don't agree that we should vote to make IRC logs public, because they are by definition not. We don't make a point of publishing hem in here because it used to be that the channel was heldd to lower standards of behavior, but that is not the case now. I think IRC logs can be displayed by anyone but it probably makes no sense to actually formally log them; waste of space IMHO. null made his point by digging into his own logs and that ought to be good enough.
As concerns the second poll, that also is not useful. Because one person is perceived by another as unfriendly doesn't make the community unfriendly; the brush is too broad. Say you agree or I spank you.
Now people, relax a little. MSameer and _null, dont talk to each other and don't even look at each other. Now can we go about striving for community again? I won't be looking in here for a few days and I expect to see less temeramentality and more code and community.
_null, fork it or something if you don't like his style; you can call the project bush if it amuses you (certainly would amuse my little mind)
you had argument with Msammer (lets say fight> so you wanna make poll saying if we are friendly or not !!!!!!!
Lets assume we made the poll and it said e are NOT friendly we gonna close....??!!!
and if it said we are friendly will we get your satisfaction...
IRC logs.. I never heard something like that be4 nor group nor any thing
Iam not intersted watching others chat..
If you face AUP violation... Log it then ask for action
Best regards
by "friendly" i mean "welcoming" newcommers even if they are newbies or "stupid" people, like some like to call them, and adhering to code of conduct according to this community rules...
and no you got me completely wrong, it's not about "my satisfaction", it's about a "better" or "worse" community. Community = US, not just me or just you ... I was about to porpose a forum section for "community developement" where i thought we should be discussing our down and bright sides... but wow now i get to know more and more
and it's not uncommon for a community to makes their IRC logs public for various reasons, like a refernece for common FAQ, a "countermeasure" against unacceptable behaviour, among some other things
ok about the IRC logs. This is a terrible wast of time and resources and for what? to prove that person foo was mean to person bar? or that person foo violated the AUP? if you feel that you need the logs you are free to log what ever you want and publish it like you just did
And about the friendly thing, I think the AUP is covering that if you just read it you will find:
No Hate speech against individuals or groups.
No personal attacks.
Please don't waste your time and ours just because you feel that someone doesn't like you.
"and no you got me completely wrong, it's not about "my satisfaction", it's about a "better" or "worse" community. Community = US, not just me or just you ... not going to explain this again....
but we have several posts dedicated to what seems like a fight between two people here.
so let me try to see if I understand what's going on
most of what I'll say has already been said, I'm just trying to paint a full picture here
baghdad
null saw things he didn't like in Msameer's code and talked to sameer on IRC about it
Msameer didn't like null's comments, or maybe he didn't like the way he expressed his critisism or maybe he didn't like null or maybe he doesn't want anyone contributing whatever
null considers the way Msameer talked to him to be insulting or unfriendly and is worried or trying to paint a picture that this might make eglug less welcome to newbies and volunteers and stuff
MSameer has the right to run his project the way he likes, this has nothing to do with EGLUG, as far as I can tell from the IRC logs he did not vilate the AUP and the discussion did seem similar to discussions I've seen with other Free Software maintainers before (giftd comes to mind).
so since this is not an EGLUG project all we can ask for is that people abide by the AUP, they did and there is no problem here, null can contionue criticizing baghdad code base and how MSameer handles contrbutions on EGLUG if he feels like it as long as he abides by the AUP, MSameer can respond in anyway he wants as long as he abides by the AUP, although it would make much more sense to take this whole discussion to the Baghdad website.
Security Vulnerabilty
ok this is the most unclear part here, it seems the null mentioned something about a 0 day exploit to MSameer at a gathering and MSameer did not understand it, or did not take it seriously enough or ignored it, there is a side fight about null testing the exploit directly on EGLUG.
the problem here is that we don't have a clear system to deal with this kind of issue, I'm not sure I like the idea of testing exploits directly on EGLUG either, and just talking about it in a gathering doesn't seem like the right thing to do.
so what do you do, do you go through drupal instead of contacting eglug? do you reveal your exploit in the forum? do you send an email to info@eglug.org? do you pm all admins? do we make a special email for this? I don't know I'm open to ideas
testing eglug security is not a bad idea in itself, I'm glad null is interested in doing it and it is only natural that we have this confusion since we've never discussed this before, frankly we assumed we'll hear about vulnerabilities through drupal, and that still might be the best way to go about it.
the eglug database
again this is a vague bit, null asked for an SQL dump or some kind of access to the eglug sql database and is angry because MSameer refused to.
so far only admins get that kind of access, if someone thinks it is a good idea to change this policy they should discuss it on the forum and not on IRC or in the gatherings or in private.
I don't see why null needs this access and I'm not sure it is a good idea at all, surely a step like this cannot be taken without community consensus the admins where voted in they get more access because the community showed trust in them.
IRC logs
null complains about IRC logs not being public, this is not a good way of phrasing the truth, as everyone pointed out nothing is preventing anyone from logging and publishing, this system works (for evidence check the IRC log excerpt null published).
according to our current system if you want your discussion to be on public record just take it to the forum, IRC is IMO not the right medium at all for serious discussion.
anyways anyone is welcome to propose changes to the way we do things, there is a process for that if after the discussion here null manages to get enbough ballots we can vote on it.
proportion
if it was true that this is a reflection of how eglug might not be open to new members and new contributors it would be a very important thing to look at, but frankly I don't understand what is null's problem, IMO he is over reacting and being unreasonable, MSameer was not offensive and null should have used the forum for the other eglug specific stuff
since the installfest the community has not been active (and I know I haven't done my part either), even before that it was stagnating, we don't have much new content either, all the website improvements proposed in the annual meeting have been delayed because of failing to upgrade our drupal installation, I think we got more important fish to fry here.
let's get back to talking about SM56 modems or something
Well, now you pinned it and i got nothing more to say...but I hope that you're pretty sure about every word you wrote above...
Thanks for your time and I'm out of here.
it's only my opinion, I can't see what MSameer did wrong. I tried to make clear all the information I got, I don't see that there is a real problem and don't understand why you are so agitated.
I did admit that we don't have a good procedure for handling the security issues and hence the confusion was a normal thing to happen.
please elaborate on what you consider negatie aspects that might drive away new members and new contributors this is important.

so are you saying that nobody voilates the AUP in the channel after it was put under the latter? no admins voilates it, in particular?
