it's not necessary to reinstall(all system) or upgrade. you may backup ur /usr which contain all package you have installed , may also u backup ur /lib and /bin.
if you have any files you have configured on /etc for services or users you may backup the files not the whole /etc.
on a minimal installation restore the old system directories overwriteing the fresh install.
This sounds like the parameters passed to the kernel ? How about you try logging in using a livecd or the distributions rescue disc, look through the lilo config /etc/lilo.conf or grub (whatever you're using) and rerun the bootloader again ?
