If you are good with computers (computer educated). You can make a switch to another operating system. Easily.
If you are NOT good with computers (computer literate). You will be stuck with the operating system you learned first. Untill you become computer educated.
For a computer literate to become computer educated, he/she must get a good feel and sense about computers. Simply she/he should spend more time using those devices.
So people who spend more time with their computers are more likely to switch operating systems.
In other words. Don't try to approach the computer literate and ask them to switch to linux. Encourage them to use windows more, and spend more time using computers. Only approach computer illiterates and computer educated types.

explain to them how FOSS software serves them in the background everyday (the web).
andlet them play with livecds just for fun.
BTW over the web, the blogs, the mailing lists and in non cyber life I meet many computer literates who got very excited about FOSS because of the ideology, it pushed some to be computer educated, pushed others to just switch or work on switching anyway (typically with the help of fellow geeks/hackers).
and in many cases it just creates second hand advocates, people who admire FOSS but can't make the switch yet.

they need to know that FOSS exists .. everyone on the planet should. I meant that we shouldn't try to push them. Since they tend to bite afterwards when they discover that things are different.
literate Vs educated
from this point of view I can see that computer literate are willing to switch faster than computer educated.because they are not going to loose anything if they gave foss a try .

what I mean
I mean by the edcuated one. Is the person who doesn't have to learn every new application. One who is comfortable exploring and trying applicaitons and stuff.
Those types are not going to lose anything they learn. Since they passed the learning few functions of a computer stage. They can just explore any system and use it.
Tab3an, annoyance would be a factor. I would be annoyed if my icons in my desktop changed position.
