The Acceptable Use Policy

Purpose

The Acceptable Use Policy is a simple set of guidelines determining behavior in eglug. The intention is not to restrict, but rather to provide the barest possible protection for members in order to provide a respectable and constructive working environment for the site. The AUP is as follows.

The Policy

The following kinds of speech will not be allowed on the eglug.org website:

  1. No content violating the laws of Egypt.
  2. No Hate speech against individuals or groups.
  3. No personal attacks.
  4. No Profanity or sexualy explicit content.
  5. No off topic content.

Topic

This LUG was founded to promote the ideals of Free/Open Source Software and GNU/Linux. Members are expected to keep the topic of work and discussion in this area as much as they can. It is understood that the line between on-topic and off-topic is sometimes not too clear, and the benefit of the doubt will be given as often as possible. Only clear violations of this rule will be considered a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy.

Blogs

Blogs are a special area of the eglug.org website, their goal is to foster community and to enable social interaction between members.

The rule about off topic content is relaxed fully when it comes to blogs, blog writers can write about anything they want as long as they don't violate the rest of the rules.

When it comes to religion and philosophy, you have the right to express your believes even if it contradicts other religions as long as it doesn't insult/attack them, there's a very fine line between both.

Moderation

It is moderators duty to ensure that content published on the eglug.org website does not violate the rules stated above.

Moderators are to avoid editing members posts, they should instead unpublish the post and ask the author to edit the post till it complies with the rules.

Moderators shall not delete content from the website permenantly, posts violating the rules shall be unpublished and moved to a locked location, any member has the right to request monitoring moderation descisions and looking at moderated posts.

A public trail of the moderation descision citing the author of the violating post, the name of the moderator and the reason for moderation shall be provided, failure to do so will be considered violation of the moderators mandate.

Any moderation descision can be revoked through the consensus of 3 moderators.

IRC channel

The AUP applies to the IRC channel #eglug , according to the following relaxed rules :

  1. No content violating the laws of Egypt.
  2. No Hate speech against individuals or groups.
  3. No personal attacks.
  4. No Profanity or sexually explicit content.

Amendment to cover the IRC channel

The IRC Channel

EGLUG operates #eglug on the freenode network. The prpose of the IRC channel is to provide a real-time forum for interaction between EGLUG members and the primary topic of discussion on the channel will be Linux and/or LUG-related matters. Off-topic discussions will also be acceptable to promote sociability amongst members.

In other regards, the Acceptable Use Policy will apply to the channel seeing as it represents the LUG. The following restrictions will apply:

  1. No content violating the laws of Egypt.
  2. No Hate speech against individuals or groups.
  3. No personal attacks.
  4. No Profanity or sexually explicit content.
  5. No off topic content.

Why is the 5th part still there (No off topic content)?

Personally I won't mind the first 4 restrictions but I guess most channel regulars would.

If people greet each other with "ya 3abeet" we can't possibly prevent them. I wouldn't like it to happen but can't see how we could prevent it without making the channel very formal and kicking someone every hour.

As with the 4th restriction, it is the most important and we shouldn't disagree on it ( No Profanity or sexually explicit content).

You're right. Here it is:

one last thing

5- Respect all religious symbols

some people like to make fun of religion which is offensive for alot of people. Some may say that its covered by rule no, 2 but its not as they think of it as just jokes or funny comments but its NOT for alot of people including me

YoussefAssad's picture

Special Treatment?

Okay, I want special treatment too.

I like KFC and hate the rest of the fast food chains. I want a special reference in the amendment specifically protecting people's right to like a certain fast food chain without fear of hearing jokes about it (I especially take exception to all the "why did the chicken cross the road" jokes).

Here's my amendment:

6. Respect all fast food chains and any symbols referring to them

I second that

Complain, do nothing, get your free Patagonian identity.

I'll vote against this

Singling out religion like that for special protection isn't something I consider relevant or logical.

It's a knee-jerk reaction.

God is a religious symbol; if this symbol is afforded special protection then the freedom of an atheist to express himself is infringed upon.

MSameer's picture

Then why didn't you vote agai

Then why didn't you vote against it in the AUP itself ??

Quote "yes she took her cake to become small so we can fit into the rabbit hole .. i`m already small aho even u can`t c me :P"

YoussefAssad's picture

What's in the AUP is different.

In the AUP it specifies religion and philosophy. This makes it generic enough to make it not that obnoxious to me.

It won't change my mind just to add the word "philosophy" in the proposed line. It isn't the same. What's a "philosophical symbol" anyhow? If I regard my willy as philosophically representing the creative impetus of the universe, are other members prohibited from criticising it?

No, if that line remains I'm voting against.

suggestion

I suggest we vote using three options

  • agree with amendment
  • don't agree with amendment
  • agree with principle but disagree with the actual text

or something to that effect, this probably means a longer voting period though.

further rules

I totally back Youssef on his claims, KFC is indeed the best fast food chain out there. I also believe that Mac sucks and therefore anyone who mentions the string "mac" should be immediately banned from the chan (including "Emacs") ;p

===== Also, the subject of warez/piracy is not mentioned clearly in the 5-6 laws. And, Egyptian laws? so we cant discuss demos because protests violate the egyptian law.

Finally, the subject of obscenity .. just tell na6oosh: !!! we hiwa hayrod 3aleeko. wesalemli 3la ho2a. besara7a, ana shayef en kol el rules deh gher waqe3ia we hatkhali el channel damaha te2eel. wel ma3doo3 feh double-standards awy.

not true

protests do not violate egyptian law they're in fact a constitutional right.

I would say stick to stuff that vilates criminal law, other laws are too gray to be enforced by us.

1) warez is not allowed by fr

1) warez is not allowed by freenode.

2) na6oosh code'll be cleaned the moment we start to apply the IRC rules.

3) We were depending on something called common sense but when people start not to think before they type then this is a must even if we don't like this.

Guess what ? The channel'll be dead and it'll be silent most of the time but now I can't ask my young sister to join and ask for help "She's not a GNU/Linux user yet anyway", But I hope you get my points.

I have to agree with you

thanks for clearing these points. I think i'd vote for the amendment now :)

One more point i forgot to add yesterday. The part about religious symbols. I think (mesh mota2aked besara7a) that its prohibted by the Egyptian law to joke about religions .. 7aga esmaha "3ezdra2 el 2adyan".
